Athens, a city where ancient history and modern vibrancy collide, offers a plethora of activities for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or someone looking for a bit of beachside relaxation, Athens has something to offer. Here are some of the top things to do in this captivating city:

1. Visit the Parthenon

No visit to Athens is complete without a trip to the Parthenon, the most iconic symbol of ancient Greece. Constructed in the 5th century BCE during the height of the Athenian Empire, the Parthenon is dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. This architectural marvel stands atop the Acropolis, offering breathtaking views of the city below. The Parthenon is not just a relic of ancient engineering; it’s a testament to the cultural and artistic achievements of Athens and has influenced architecture worldwide.

2. Embark on a Food Adventure

Greek cuisine is a delight for the senses, and Athens is the perfect place to embark on a culinary journey. Be sure to try:

  • Lamb and Potatoes: A hearty and traditional Greek dish, often slow-cooked to perfection.
  • Dolmades: Grape leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, and herbs.
  • Gyros: A popular street food featuring meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, usually served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce.
  • Souvlaki: Skewers of grilled meat, often served with vegetables and pita.
  • Moussaka: A rich, layered dish made with eggplant, minced meat, and béchamel sauce.

For an unforgettable dining experience, head to a rooftop bar that offers stunning views of the Acropolis. One gem is 180 Degrees West, known for its amazing food and panoramic vistas. Located in a more residential part of Athens, it provides incredible value without the high prices of more touristy spots.

3. Enjoy the Beach

Athens isn’t just about ancient ruins; it also offers beautiful beaches accessible by the local metro. A must-visit is Vouliagmeni Beach, often recommended as one of the best in Athens. While we chose to stay in the city this time, leaving the beaches for our upcoming trips to the Greek islands, Vouliagmeni is definitely on our list for next time.

4. Bar Hop Through the City

Athens boasts a vibrant nightlife, and bar hopping is a fantastic way to experience it. Explore the various alleyways and discover local gems like Tiki Bar, known for its epic tunes and laid-back vibes. The nightlife scene in Athens is diverse, offering everything from cozy taverns to lively nightclubs.

5. Stroll Through Plaka

No trip to Athens would be complete without a leisurely stroll through Plaka, the city’s oldest neighborhood. Nestled at the foot of the Acropolis, Plaka is filled with narrow streets, charming shops, and delightful eateries. It’s the perfect place to find unique souvenirs and enjoy authentic Greek cuisine.
